Smyrna is punished by Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, and begins to lust after her father. In some sources, she enters her father's dark room and sleeps with him for 7 days and 7 nights, and when her father finds out that the person he is with is his daughter, it is too late. After these events, her father wants to kill his daughter. But the gods hear the cursed girl's screams and turn her into a myrtle tree. This myrtle tree cracks during birth and Adonis is born from its trunk.

The fight between the two goddesses grows and eventually Zeus decides that the child will stay with Aphrodite for 4 months, Persephone for 4 months, and with whomever he wants for the remaining 4 months.
When Adonis goes to Persephone, who lives in the underworld, Aphrodite becomes so sad that all living things mourn with him, the leaves fade and the trees dry up. Thus, autumn comes. When he leaves the underworld and comes to Aphrodite, nature comes to life and the leaves turn green. Thus, spring comes. Adonis begins to spend the remaining 4 months with Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, with whom he falls in love. Persephone is not the only one who is jealous of this situation. Aphrodite's former lover Ares and the goddess of hunting Artemis also want to kill Adonis.
In some sources, Ares disguised himself as a wild boar and badly injured Adonis, who was hunting, in his body, and when Aphrodite heard his screams, it was too late. Trying to catch up with her, Aphrodite gets pricked by a rose thorn and the white rose begins to bloom red. The anemone flower is formed from the blood of Adonis falling to the ground.

Smyrna, güzellik tanrıçası Afrodit tarafından cezalandırılır ve babasına karşı şehvet duymaya başlar. Bazı kaynaklarda babasının karanlık odasına girip 7 gün 7 gece onunla birlikte olur ve babası birlikte olduğu kişinin kızı olduğunu öğrendiğinde artık çok geçtir. Diğer kaynaklara göreyse 12 gün ya da 40 gün 40 gece bir birliktelik yaşanmıştır. Babası bu yaşananlardan sonra kızını öldürmek ister. Fakat tanrılar lanetlenen kızın haykırışlarını duyar ve onu bir mersin ağacına çevirirler. Bu mersin ağacı doğum sırasında çatlar ve gövdesinden Adonis doğar.
Adonis'i doğar doğmaz gören Afrodit ona aşık olur ve onu yeraltı tanrıçası Persephone’ye büyütmesi için emanet eder. Adonis’i görür görmez aşık olan Persephone, onu bir daha Afrodit’e vermek istemez. İki tanrıça arasındaki kavga büyür ve sonunda Zeus, çocuğun 4 ay Afrodit ile 4 ay Persephone ile geriye kalan 4 ay ise istediği kişiyle kalmasına karar verir.
Adonis, yeraltı dünyasında yaşayan Persephone’nin yanına gittiğinde, Afrodit o kadar üzülür ki tüm canlılar onunla birlikte yas tutar, yapraklar solar ve ağaçlar kurur. Böylece sonbahar gelmiş olur. Yeraltı dünyasından çıkıp Afrodit’in yanına geldiğinde ise doğa canlanır ve yapraklar yeşillenir. Böylece ilkbahar gelmiş olur. Adonis geriye kalan 4 ayını aşık olduğu güzellik tanrıçası Afrodit ile geçirmeye başlar. Bu durumu kıskanan yalnızca Persephone değildir. Afrodit’in eski aşığı Ares ve av tanrıçası Artemis’te Adonis’i öldürmek ister.
Bazı kaynaklarda Ares bir yaban domuzu kılığına girerek av yapan Adonis’i gövdesinden kötü bir şekilde yaralar ve Afrodit, onun çığlıklarını duyduğunda artık çok geçtir. Ona yetişmeye çalışan Afrodit’in ayağına gül dikeni batar ve beyaz olan gül artık kırmızı olarak açmaya başlar. Adonis’in ise toprağa düşen kanlarından anemon çiçeği meydana gelir.
